Difficult times disrupt your conventional ways of thinking and push you to forge better habits of thought, performance and being.~Robin S. Sharma
Habits… Start With The Bad
In our last post, Doug and I shared how to rid yourself of beliefs that aren’t serving you anymore.
Now we’re going to move on to getting rid of habits that we’ve developed that aren’t helping us out in life.
Much of what we do throughout the day is done on autopilot- our actions are unconscious and mechanical.
When little thought or intention is directed towards an aspect of our life, there is a risk of becoming entrenched in the way we do things… Habits.
Habits develop to make life easier for us… So we don’t have to think.
Too many habits and routines lead to a boring life where nothing new is discovered… We go through life asleep. That’s no fun!
Habits Become Superstitions
It’s human nature to take the easiest way through a situation… If something upsets us or causes discomfort we’ll avoid it in the future.
While this can protect us it’s usually an overreaction… We’re not out collecting berries and avoiding cave lions anymore.
When I was about eight years old, two dogs from the neighbor’s yard came over barking and growling at me. I huddled against the house as they continued to growl and be aggressive.
The neighbor finally came and got their dogs… I wasn’t hurt but the experience terrified me. For years after that I avoided all strange dogs. One incident taught me that dogs were bad… This became my personal superstition and my habit of avoiding dogs developed.
Today, I realize not all dogs are bad. I still approach strange ones with caution, but I don’t let my habit of avoidance control my life anymore.
Superstitions and habits impose limits on life. They make your experiences less rich and life is lived the same way each day… Our lives become smaller in this way.
In our next posts, Doug and I will share some techniques to help you recognize your habits, why you have them and how to get rid of them. Stay tuned!
One experience does not mean all of your experiences will be the same 🙂 thanks for sharing, hope all is well with you
