Simplify And Declutter Your Life.

The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.~Hans Hofmann

Too Much Stuff

Destruction, in the sense that we’ve been talking about it, doesn’t have to mean actually physically breaking something. It can also mean getting rid of something that isn’t adding value to your life.

Physical objects take on energy and can weigh us down and hold us back. Much of what we hold on to isn’t really necessary… There isn’t an actual need for the objects. There may be a strong desire attached to physical things, but very little is required to live life.

A quick test to determine if an object is a need or a want is to question if it’s contributing to your goals for yourself. If it is, good. If it isn’t, it’s just clutter that we all hang on to for reasons other than need.

Sometimes objects hold sentimental value… I have a lot of old Christmas decorations that belonged to my Grandmother and Mother. Do I need them? No. I could function in life without them. Are they contributing to me reaching my goals? Yes. The decorations remind me of happy times as a child. They inspire me to try and create the same memories for others when December rolls around… They make me a better person.

Some objects don’t contribute anything to your life other than being an anchor holding you in the past. Old clothes and shoes that don’t fit, deals we found but didn’t really need and gifts given that have no real use for us are the types of things to get rid of.

Get Rid Of The Anchors
Doug is buried in comics...

Doug is buried in comics…

I’ve moved five times in the past fourteen years. I had boxes of junk I kept moving and never unpacked… Mostly stuff from my childhood that I didn’t even want anymore.

During the last couple moves I began to sell, throw away or give away the stuff that was weighing me down.

These boxes of things were spiritually and emotionally draining. I don’t know why I held on to everything so long.

I converted much of the valuable stuff into cash… Ebay is good for this. Much was donated or put to the side of the road too. How stuff is shed isn’t as important as just getting it out of your life.

I still have some things to get rid of. My comic book collection is pretty large but pretty much valueless now. The value tanked when the internet flooded the market with more books than collectors want.

So, I have five large boxes of comics in my loft that I spent a fortune on and I’ll never get the money back. I guess that’s why I still hold on to them… The thought of how much was spent on them.

The comics are the one major anchor left in my life. I try not to think about them… I’ll be better off when I finally give them away. I don’t look at them and all they do is remind me of money poorly spent… I’ll be happier when they’re gone, some day…

Exercise

Think about all the stuff that you’re holding on to. Why are you doing it?

Go through your closets, drawers, cabinets and other places you stash stuff. Take some time to examine the items.

When is the last time you used it, or even touched it? Has it been more than a year? Does it fit anymore? Does it still work?

It should be pretty easy to identify the obvious anchors.

Get rid of stuff… Clothes aren’t coming back in fashion… Old jeans aren’t going to fit again tomorrow. Pass the objects on to someone else of just throw them away. Be grateful for the use you received from each item and then let it go.

Go through your stuff again and examine what you chose to hold on to. Does it have monetary value? Sell it… Gift it to someone… Be ruthless.

If you find things that help you progress towards your goals and/or make you a better person, hang on to them. This will be a conscious decision which is better than hoarding stuff “just because”.

I think you’ll be surprised by how much better you feel once you let go of your clutter…

  1. I’m a person who is guilty of keeping things because I feel like someday it will be valuable. But like you so well said, these things aren’t going to be of use any time soon! Thanks for the reminder. Hope you’re having a good day 🙂

    1. Thanks, I had a great weekend- I used to keep stuff because with the intention of selling it “one day”. One day rarely came around though. I still have a few things waiting to be put on Ebay, but not nearly as much as in the past.

  2. Great idea as I have practised myself many times 😀

    1. It’s good to do this regularly.

  3. been werkin on this one fer yearz here 🙂

  4. This is something I have been working on lately although there is much in my home that I won’t get rid of yet because it has come from family members that are no longer with me (although some of the stuffed animals from my childhood have gone). It took me a week but I decluttered my craft room. Maybe in a year’s time I will do it again. It’s always fun to have a big clean out. Next week I am tackling my book collections. 🙂

    1. I like finding stuff I forgot I had, or I haven’t thought about in a while. I have a work room I need to go through this summer and clear out… I started storing stuff in it and now it’s not a usable space anymore.

      1. I’m sure my other half would say that there is much more to get rid of but maybe in time, those things will go. However right now, I am pleased with what I have achieved. I still have things like the filing cabinet and spare room to tackle yet but baby steps all the way. 🙂

Yes, yes, YES….I’m in the middle of this situation too. It is DEFINITELY clean-up time! GAME OVER.

  6. This is SO me, but I can say that I am working on it and it feels SO GOOD. I’m glad that I haven’t reached HOARDER level. Oh, nooooooo….but there is still a LOT of cleaning and letting go and healing to be done. This is the Path we’re all on, or at least, the Path we all SHOULD be on. 🙂

    1. Keep at it! I bet you’re not even close to hoarder status… I’ve been in a few legitimate hoarders homes when I worked as a property safety officer… It’s unbelievable and sad that some people end up living in such horrible conditions. We may be pack rats, but hoarders are at a whole different level!

I’m feeling weighed down by a lot of junk: stuff for pets we no longer have, equipment that is obsolete or broken, stuff I thought I would use but know now I won’t. I love the word “anchor” for these things. I’ll try to think of them that way and see if I can’t start clearing them out of my house.

    1. I understand,,, It’s difficult to begin the process but once you start it becomes liberating and even fun. It’s surprising how much mental space our stuff occupies.

  8. I packed light for vacation this year and you know what? Didn’t miss a thing. Only trouble is . . . now I don’t want to leave the ocean 🙂 Such a relaxing time not worrying about what I wear or buying things I don’t need.

    Great post, John and Doug!

    1. I’m glad you had a great vacation. The ocean has a special draw for me. I’m lucky in that I can get in the car and be at the beach in half an hour… I think I’ll do just that sometime this week!

      1. Did a LOT of thinking in the stillness in the presence of the ocean. I hope you get some time by the sea this week – it is sooo good for the soul. 🙂 I missed blogging! Can’t wait to get back in the groove with you guys.

  9. Good post! I need to rid myself

  10. of things as well as ideas and people who are not contributing positively to my life. Thank you!

    1. Thanks! It’s hard to do at first but gets easier with practice… At least for me it did. I try to do it regularly because stuff keeps sneaking into my life.
