It’s Not Always Rainbows and Sunshine.

I’ve had some dark nights of the soul, of course, but giving in to depression would be a sellout, a defeat. ~Christopher Hitchens

Doug and I have been writing our series, Find Your Path In Life. for a while now. We’re working hard to figure what we want in life and how to get there. I don’t want to give the impression that we think we have all the answers and this process is easy… We don’t, and it’s not.

Some days Doug questions himself.

Some days Doug questions himself.

Some days it’s difficult to see a way through to the future. Sometimes I can’t force myself to write anything, or to draw another picture of Doug. Many days I feel discouraged and anxious about the future…But that’s ok.

I’m sure many of you feel this way too, sometimes. Anything worthwhile takes effort, and frustration and banging your head against a wall.

Don’t feel like you’re doing something wrong if you feel doubt, or get a bit depressed. These are normal reactions to change and disorder. Doug and I deal with it too.

Stick to your goals and dreams. Not every day will feel like a step forward. It’s ok to feel unsure about your decisions, but keep plodding on anyways… Sometimes it’s hard for monkeys to get out of bed too.

Is your life creative or routine?

  1. I agree. The trick is not to become bitter, but I doubt you would have that problem! 😉

    1. Not bitter, no… Just discouraged sometimes.

      1. No kidding! I know what you mean!

  2. Its very interesting how often your posts are just what I need to hear. Started a new job a few weeks ago and the first couple weeks were amazing. Then the last couple days were not so amazing. I think alot of it is I’m working 7 days a week and that’s catching up with me. After my last day at the old job in about a week I’ll transition from part time at both to full time at the other. Hoping a day or two off a week will give me more me time to recharge. Anyway, thanks for this post. Was getting a little discouraged. Been making alot of changes lately and mostly its been great but like you say there will be days…just have to keep chugging along. Christopher Hitchens was an amazing person, so intelligent.

    1. I’m glad my posts reach you when you need to hear them. I’m a believer in synchronicity…

It’s difficult to work all the time, even if it’s something you enjoy. I ran into this problem with my blog. I was working on it seven days a week and started to feel like I had nothing else in life. I enjoy it, but I needed to step back and do some other things.

I still post almost every day, but I work more efficiently, which opens up time for other pursuits. Some days I don’t feel like looking at my blog, but I sit down and work at it… Maybe it’s some marketing or reading about blog techniques, but I force myself to make forward progress…

  3. This was timely for me too John, thank you! I tend to want to curl up and stay in bed when I’m overwhelmed…which has been a lot lately. In the immortal words of Dory…”Just keep swimming” ….
Thanks to you and Doug for the reminder! (the photo of Doug in bed is adorable!)

    1. Hi Robin- I understand how you feel. That’s why I wrote this post. Someone reading my blog just sees the part where I’m positive and encouraging myself and others to keep striving for their dreams… No one sees the times where I don’t even want to look at my laptop…

We all have ups and downs, even stuffed monkeys. We all need to keep forging ahead though, to reach contentment.

Doug hopped out of bed and rolled in some dirt when you accused him of being adorable… He’s a strange monkey.
