Rules Of Life?

I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.~ Robert A. Heinlein

Why are there rules?

There are rules to life? If you listen to the authorities- Parents, teachers, bosses, then yes. Rules are there to keep you in line, to keep you thinking and doing your prescribed activities. These authorities became your inner critic and still live inside your head, moderating your life.

I’m not talking about the basic rules, summed up as “harm no one”… I mean the “shouldn’ts” and “can’ts” we’ve been fed since we were children. These arbitrary rules were imposed on us, and hold us back. Often, there were and are punishments if we break these rules… Children are grounded or spanked, adults are shamed or fired.

Much unhappiness in our lives stems from trying to follow the rules… We try to be like everyone else. Personally, that is impossible. Doug and I are unique monkeys, and we suffered a lot growing up. We always felt different… We didn’t fit in. Our growth and successes were stunted by trying to be normal.

As an adult I now realize my uniqueness is a strength. I wonder what I would have accomplished by now if I was encouraged to be me, with my different perspective, instead of being forced into the standard mold…

Be your own monkey

We’ve spent a lot of time figuring out who we are and what we want from life.

Many of the rules have changed. It’s not common anymore to work for one company, retire after thirty years (with a pension) and move to where the palm trees grow. So why are we still trying to live by the rules?

Burn down the rules of life!

Burn down the rules of life!

We shouldn’t be. It’s up to us to figure out what we want from life and how to achieve it.

We can’t go to work, put ourselves on autopilot for thirty years and be taken care of the rest of our lives.

In the next few posts Doug and I will be sharing how to break the rules, work through the disorder and chaos and create new opportunities.

It’s monkey anarchy time! Grab your pencil and notepad and get ready to burn down some dusty old conventions. It’s time to get rid of the rules of life that hold us back…

The rules have changed. So should you.
